How to Install Shiplap

Newsflash: It’s actually a lot easier than you’d think.

Ever since Joanna Gaines has taken over our television screens—and our homes, decor styles, and pretty much the entire universe—shiplap has been the thing you need to have to make your home super trendy. How else would you turn your drab room into a modern farmhouse paradise?

HGTV has produced a lot more home renovation stars than the Jo Gaines—Chip Wade of Curb Appeal: The Block is also known for the way he can transform a space. Recently, Chip began renovating a gorgeous Georgia lakehouse—known as Misty Mill—and he’s taking us along for the ride. His newest project includes—you guessed it—installing shiplap.

Here’s what Chip says you’ll need for this project, along with a step-by-step guide to help you make it happen.

What You’ll Need:

  • Laser level
  • Chop saw (for the wood)
  • Air Compressor
  • Pencil
  • 16g nail gun
  • 23g micro pinner
  • Wood glue
  • Hammer
  • Stud finder
  • Measuring tape

Instructions:

Step 1: Decide how high up the wall the shiplap will go.

Step 2: Mark a level line at the top of where you want your shiplap to start.

Tip: If you’re covering the whole wall, place the level line halfway up the wall.

Step 3: Measure down to the floor from your level line, and mark the height of each board to make sure that they’ll fit.

Step 4: Apply the glue, then nail the boards to each stud in the wall.

Step 5: Cut around the electrical boxes and other details.

Tip: Check every few boards to make sure the shiplap is still level!
