Decluttering Tips Before Moving

Tip #1: Start With The Heaviest Items

When you’re packing, starting with the heaviest items is a great strategy. This goes for decluttering, too. The more you can pare down the heavy items in your home, the easier you will make the eventual move. Moving fewer weighty items can also save you money in fees from the moving company.

Books are among the heaviest items in your home that could stand decluttering. Plus, books that are in usable condition can be conveniently donated.

Tip #2: Don’t Forget The Pantry

When you’re focused on packing up the living room, home office, and bedrooms, it can be easy to forget the kitchen. However, with the move coming up, you should spend some time decluttering the pantry and refrigerator.

First off, get rid of any food that’s expired. Then, look through the pantry for non-perishable items like dry pasta, bags of rice, canned foods, dried fruit, and nuts. Anything that you’re unlikely to eat before the move can be donated to the local food bank to lighten your load.

Tip #3: Take a Hard Look at Your DVDs, CDs, and VHS Tapes

There’s no denying that with streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, and Pandora, older media items are getting far less use. So, take a look through your DVDs, CDs, and VHS tapes to find the items that don’t need to be brought to your new home. Home videos and favorite albums or movies should likely be saved. But, any items that you don’t need can be donated or recycled.

Tip #4: Be Discerning With Clothing

Clothing can become surprisingly heavy and cumbersome when it comes to a big move. Plus, clothes in good condition can be donated to your local thrift store or used clothing drive. So, before you go to your new South Florida home, sort through the clothing in your home. Items that don’t fit anymore or haven’t been worn in over a year aren’t worth putting in the moving van.

Tip #5: Nix Old Cosmetics, Medications, and Toiletries

Expired items in the bathroom can take up more space than you may expect. By simply getting rid of cosmetics and toiletries that or old or no longer in use, you can lighten up your moving load significantly. While you’re decluttering the bathroom, it’s also a good time to properly dispose of expired or unneeded medications.

Decluttering your home now, before moving, will spare you time, effort, and money. There’s no need to bring along unwanted items into your new South Florida home! So, go ahead and start sorting now – you’ll thank yourself later!
